Harley Davidson Motor CO. Originated as part of the International Union – United Automobile Workers of the AFL, as part of all hourly employees that worked for Harley-Davidson. All Skilled Trades, Assembly, Production and service employees. In 1955, at the time that the AFL and CIO merged, and the Harley-Davidson UAW became the AIW, the Tool & Die makers and the Machine Repair employees decided that they would be best represented by a more Skilled Trade orientated Union. Since they represent mostly skilled trades, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers best fit that request. We carved ourselves out of the AIW at that time, and joined up and have been with them ever since. The structure of our Local is much different from 7209’s, in that we are a small part of a Lodge consisting of approximately 19 other shops. We have no financial responsibilities, nor do we have any authority to make decisions that would in effect change our contract language without getting our Business Representative involved first. Our dues are paid directly to our Lodge. All decisions as to whether or not to pursue grievances to arbitration or not lies solely with our District Director. We currently represent 112 people in total. The 64 who work in the Tool Rooms include 1 support person and 3 Apprentices. The remaining 48 work in the Machine Repair areas, which include 2 Apprentices and 46 Journey Level employees. They service all Powertrain Operation Facilities, and one at the Product Development Center. There are currently 2 Powertrain Facilities in Milwaukee Area. Our Jurisdiction covers facilities operated by Harley-Davidson Inc. in all of Milwaukee County and the bordering Counties. In 1995, the Machinists Union joined the AIW (currently PACE) President and fought to keep our XL engine line in Milwaukee, instead of going to Kansas City. With the help of Powertrain Operation’s Management, we succeeded. We met all the required criteria from Senior Management, along with putting together a very good business case. The outcome from that effort was keeping our work, and an expansion agreement that embraced the partnership and a High Performance Type work environment. Today we, as employees, continue to work together, IAM, PACE, Management, and the salaried, for the betterment of Harley-Davidson and our customers.
