This Day in Labor History

March 1842
Commonwealth v. Hunt was a landmark legal decision by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court on the subject of labor unions.
Chief Justice Lemuel Shaw ruled that unions were legal organizations and had the right to organize and strike.
Before this decision, labor unions which attempted to 'close' or create an unionized workplace could be charged with conspiracy.

This Day in Labor History

February 24, 1912
Women and children were beaten by police during a textile workers strike against the American Woolen Company in Lawrence, Massachusetts.
Although this happened in February, I am going to leave it as a reminder that in the eyes of far too many, even today, no toll in
human suffering and lives is too great in the pursuit corporate profits!

This Day in Labor History

May 5, 1886
DO NOT FORGET! On May fifth, 1886, thousands of Milwaukee workers engaged in a peaceful march on the Bay View Rolling Mills
as part of a nation wide campaign to bring about the 8 hour day. When the marchers were 200 yards away, the State Militia fired
on the crowd, killing seven people. This was the bloodiest labor demonstration in Wisconsin's history, and began a new struggle
for a more humane workplace and more just society.

This Day in Labor History

25 June 1938
The Wages and Hours (later Fair Labor Standards) Act is passed, banning child labor and setting the 40-hour work week.
The Act went into effect in October 1940, and was upheld in the Supreme Court on 3 February 1941.

FAIR LABOR PRACTICES

The historical notes are provided here to remind you of the tremendous struggle that took place in this nation,
created with the premise that "all men are created equal under the law". This was not to be a political and economic system
for the land owners, labor barrons and rich industrialists. What so many have fought and died for on our own soil is again
under attack. What you hear from the Neo-conservative Right may sound "American", "patriotic" and "God-fearing" but,
you must dig deeper to get the truth. Go to our Union Links and News & Views pages for new sources to keep you informed!
